Dún Laoghaire constituency with a population of approximately 120,000, is one of Ireland’s most prominent and politically significant constituencies. Situated along the southern shore of Dublin Bay, the constituency encompasses a diverse range of communities, from the historic harbour town of Dún Laoghaire itself to the suburbs of Blackrock, Monkstown, Dalkey, Killiney, Cabinteely, Glenageary, Sallynoggin, Loughlinstown and Shankill. It has existed in its current form since 1977, succeeding the former Dún Laoghaire and Rathdown constituency. Over the years, constituency boundaries have been adjusted to reflect population changes, most recently for the 2024 election.

Dún Laoghaire is home to a diverse economy that includes world-leading technology companies such as Dell, global life sciences firms including Amgen, major healthcare institutions such as Blackrock Clinic and the National Rehabilitation Hospital, and internationally recognised educational centres including IADT.

Dún Laoghaire is also home to major rugby, GAA, football, tennis, golf, athletics and rowing clubs.
Amenities
Dún Laoghaire is one of Ireland's leading centres for education, creativity and innovation, home to the Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT) and in our neighbouring constituency, University College Dublin (UCD). The constituency is renowned for its excellent primary and secondary schools, attracting families from across the region. The constituency has strong transport links with buses and DART services linking communities from Booterstown to Shankill, together with road connections via the N11 and Rock Road. An extensive network of cycling routes has also been developed. Leisure activities include exploring a number of coastal and inland walking routes and sea swimming at a number of areas within the constituency.
Local Government in Dún Laoghaire
The Dún Laoghaire constituency is closely aligned with the administrative area of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council (DLRCC). The council is responsible for housing, planning, roads, environmental services, libraries, parks, community development and local economic initiatives. It is governed by 40 elected councillors representing six Local Electoral Areas (LEAs): Blackrock, Dún Laoghaire, Dundrum, Glencullen-Sandyford, Killiney-Shankill and Stillorgan.
The county council plays a particularly important role in shaping the character of the constituency. Decisions relating to housing development, coastal protection, transport planning, village enhancement schemes and climate adaptation have a direct impact on communities across Blackrock, Monkstown, Dalkey, Killiney, Cabinteely, Sallynoggin and Shankill. Given the area's combination of coastal amenities, heritage buildings and continued population growth, planning policy is often one of the most closely watched aspects of local government.
Fine Gael in the Constituency
Dún Laoghaire has traditionally been one of Fine Gael's strongest constituencies. The party maintaining a significant presence at both national and local government level. In the current Dáil, Fine Gael holds two of the constituency's four seats, represented by:
Jennifer Carroll MacNeill TD, Minister for Health since January 2025. She has represented Dún Laoghaire in the Dáil since 2020 and previously served on Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council.
Barry Ward TD, elected to Dáil Éireann in 2024 after previously serving as a Senator and as a councillor on Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, where he led the Fine Gael group.
The other TDs currently representing the constituency are Cormac Devlin (Fianna Fáil) and Richard Boyd Barrett (People Before Profit).

Fine Gael is also the largest party on Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council and enjoys particularly strong representation in areas such as Blackrock, Dún Laoghaire, Killiney-Shankill and Stillorgan. The strength of Fine Gael at local level is reflected in the council's leadership. In June 2026, Councillor Barry Saul (Fine Gael) was elected Cathaoirleach (Chairperson) of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, while Councillor Mary Fayne (Fine Gael) was elected Leas-Chathaoirleach (Deputy Chairperson).
