Delivering Free HRT for Women: A Milestone for Women’s Health
Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill welcomed the introduction of the new scheme providing Hormone Replacement Therapy free of charge through participating pharmacies describing it as a major step forward for women's health services.
"Free HRT is available for women from today at participating pharmacies all over Ireland. This is a fantastic support for women and a significant milestone in our commitment to women's health."
The new scheme marking a significant milestone in the Government's commitment to improving women's healthcare and supporting those experiencing menopause.
The initiative, funded through Budget 2025, removes the cost of HRT medicines and products for eligible women and also covers dispensing fees, ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent access to essential treatment.
The scheme applies to HRT medicines and products prescribed by a healthcare professional for the treatment of symptoms associated with all stages of menopause. Women can access these treatments at participating pharmacies without charge.
Minister Carroll MacNeill highlighted the importance of ensuring women can access treatment without financial concerns.
"From today, every woman in Ireland has free access to both essential HRT products and the dispensing fees, removing financial barriers and providing vital support during all stages of menopause."
The rollout of free HRT forms part of a broader effort to improve care before, during and after menopause and reflects the Government's ongoing focus on women's health. The Department of Health worked closely with the HSE and community pharmacies nationwide to ensure the scheme could be delivered effectively.
Women seeking to access the scheme can consult their healthcare provider regarding HRT treatment and use the HSE's pharmacy finder service to locate participating pharmacies in their area.
