A Historic Step Forward for Women’s Healthcare

20th October 2026

This week marked a landmark moment for women’s healthcare in Ireland as Government approved the new National Maternity Hospital at the St Vincent’s University Hospital campus in Elm Park to proceed to construction.

The decision represents the largest single investment in women’s healthcare infrastructure in the history of the State and brings us closer to delivering a world-class maternity hospital for women, babies and families across Ireland.

The new hospital will provide state-of-the-art maternity, neonatal and gynaecological services, with the benefits of being co-located alongside the specialist and acute services of St Vincent’s University Hospital. This will ensure faster access to critical care, safer management of complex pregnancies and births, and a better overall experience for patients.

Designed around the needs of women and families, the hospital will feature 244 private en-suite rooms, 24 birthing rooms, five operating theatres, expanded fertility and endometriosis services, and capacity for up to 10,000 births each year.

As construction prepares to commence in early 2027, this project signals a major investment in the future of healthcare. Most importantly, it will provide modern, safe and compassionate care for generations of women, babies and families to come.
